It’s about that time of year where the white girlies like myself start getting a little overzealous about pumpkin spice and the rest of the world starts to tease us about it. Fair point, but I offer this rebuttal- we are simply following in the footsteps of our ancestors, and it is seasonally appropriate for us to begin using these warming spices to protect our frail, pale bodies from the imminent cold & flu.
Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Clove, Allspice, a dash of pepper- as soon as the first chill breeze hits we cannot get enough- these spices have come to be so recognizable as “fall”, so instantly associated. There was a time where I tried to dim my enthusiasm for the delectable flavors for fear of being labelled a Basic Bitch (God forbid, my name is already Rebekah so I’m always one pumpkin spice latte & infinity scarf away from being labelled a full blown Becky) but NO LONGER. I proudly season and spice up everything nice because there is actually such good reason for these specific spices to be used at this specific time of year.
